The Abundant Life Blog
The Abundant Life Blog is here to encourage and inspire Believer's to live emotionally healthy lives. Using the Word of God and the principals found within, we will apply concepts to the challenges of daily life.
Occasionally you will see a blog focus on Chain Breaking. At Out of the Woods, we recognize that sometimes our history and our habits work against us -- creating chains on our soul that keep us held back. These blogs are specifically designed to break those chains.

Last year was so easy. I just went online, loaded my online shopping cart with an assortment of Veggie Tale DVDs and waited for them to show up at my door. Instant Christmas. My daughter loved her "Very Veggie" Christmas. Earlier today, I stood in the Christian bookstore with a glazed look on my face. The salesperson came by. "You look overwhelmed," she commented. She seemed eager to help, but there was nothing she could do for my problem, "I'm trying to find something my daughter doesn't alr...Read Full Post »

Well, it's all over the news right now... from reports of gang rape at the University of Virgina to allegations Bill Cosby drugged and rapped over twenty women. Everybody is talking about the problem of sexual assault. Politicians to football players are trying to figure out how to make a difference in what is appearing to be a growing problem.
Sadly, while a lot is being said, little is being done to spred the news that survivors of sexual abuse can overcome. They can have ...Read Full Post »

Few emotions are as devastating as guilt. Guilt and stop a believer in his or her tracks and keep the Abundant Christian life far from reach. But believers don't have to be trapped by guilt. In my series The Believer's Struggle with Guilt, we'll examine how guilt gets into our lives and how to get it out.

The online book club is meeting in person! If you live in the Atlanta area get ready. We will be meeting on the third Saturday of every month in nearby Riverdale, Georgia. Don't tell me about the traffic. This location was specifically chosen because it is away from all the traffic and not far from US 75 and US 85. You can get there. Besides, there will be doughnuts... Kristy Kreme doughnuts.
Join us for the first club meeting. Saturday, November 15, 2014 at 2 PM at...Read Full Post »

It has been 13 years since that fateful and almost everything one could think to say about it has already been said. Memorials are in place, traditions have been set, a day of service has been set aside. In many ways its just another day.
I am struck with the nagging question, "What have I personally done to help end radical Islam?" For me, the answer has been very little. Afterall, I don't have any policital power. I will argue that the problem really has more to do with the condition ...Read Full Post »

In the wee hours of this morning, we lost Truett Cathy the founder of Chick-Fil-A. He was a giant of a man who created an empire. What is more amazing is that many are remembering him not for the fast food empire, but rather for his dedication to his faith. If you haven't heard already, Mr. Cathy taught 8th grade boys Sunday School classes for 52 years. Wow. That's a long time with a very difficult population. You don't do that for 52 years on a whim. You do that out of a sense of calling and...Read Full Post »

Okay, it may not be that new, but its new to me and its free and its wonderful. Its scripturetyper.com. Scripture memory for the 21st century. Here's how it works. You decide what verses you want to memorize. They have a variety of collections of verses, right now I'm working on the spiritual growth group. Then you memorize the verse by typing it over and over. Easter is only three weeks away! Are you ready? Are the Easter dresses in the closet? Have you picked out the perfect chocolate bunny? Did you get enough egg dye? Are there jelly beans in the cupboard and a ham in the freezer?
First they commerialized Christmas. Now they have taken over Easter. As we prepare for this most sacred holiday, let us remember that Jesus is the reason for the season.

I know every life coach, motivational speaker, and counselor tells us to make a list of our priorities and/or values so that we can determine if our lives really reflect the things we say are a priority. The practice has become so common it has lost his effectiveness. Believers have a tendency to rattle off the cliche, God first, family second, me third as if any other answer is somehow blasphemous. Maybe its time to look at the practice a little more closely and with a bit...Read Full Post »

For many believers, knowing God's will is one of the most challenge parts of their Christian walk. I know it is for me. Recently, my husband and I were faced with making a major decision. We thought about it. We prayed about it. We researched it. We thought we knew exactly what God's will was. We began acting on it and God pushed door after door open. We were very excited.
Then doors started closing. Lots of doors started closing. &...Read Full Post »

If a friend or family member is struggling with depression, your intervention could be key in their recovery. However, very often loved ones don't really know what to do. One of the best things we can to is to be there. By that I mean, be available for whatever is needed. We do not solve problems for the depressed person, but we do support by listening, suggesting, listening, encouraging, listening, praying, and last but not least listening.
If you are trying to ...Read Full Post »

The season of Lent is here. Much of the conversation I had today centered on what, if anything, people were giving up for Lent. It was interesting as we all complained about how long 40 days was and how hard it was going to be to give up soda or meat or whatever for that time. There were even a few arguments over the exact definition of "sweets" and "fast food". Perhaps you had a similar experience at your place of business.
Anyway I sat back and listened to one...Read Full Post »

Forgive me. I couldn't resist the pun. Lent is fast approaching though. In just a few days Christians everywhere will be giving up their chocolates, favorite television shows, and similar vices in an annual tradition that is supposed to prepare us for the Easter season. Unfortunately, there is often so much focus on what we choose to deny ourselves, little time is spent on the actual purpose of the fast. Let's make this year different.
Let's enter the Lente...Read Full Post »
