Titles and Identity

I was reading, sorry I can't remember where, a challenge to try to get to know others without asking about what they do for a career.  The idea was to foster a greater emotional connection by moving past titles and labels to get to know the real person.  It got me thinking.  If I were to meet someone for the first time and was prohibited from asking, "What do you do?" what would I do.

We live in a society where people are often defined by what they do instead of who they are.  It's been over a week since I read this article and I still am not too sure how I could approach this.  I suppose I could ask how the other person knows the host or found their way to the event we were attending.  This does not really do the trick though.  So...I am asking you.  If you meet a stranger at a get together and wanted to know that person better, how would you do it without mentioning their career?
